Single Unit is, as the name suggests, a one-man project masterminded and executed
by Norwegian multi-instrumentalist/visual artist Are Mokkelbost. Hard to pigeonhole
as far as genre goes, Single Unit's music falls somewhere in between the spastic
drum'n'bass of some of Aphex Twin´s more aggressive work and the industrial-leaning
metal experimentation of fellow Norwegians Red Harvest and Dodheimsgard. For the
first Single Unit album, 2001's Family of Forces (released on Norway's Jester
Records), Mokkelbost handled all of the songwriting, playing, and production as
well as the graphic design, revealing an intensely personal and already strongly
developed artistic vision. Mokkelbost also plays in the Oslo-based improv/electronics
trio ARM, with whom he has been involved since the mid-'90s.
